FDA Issues Strictest Warning on Diabetes Drugs
The New York Times | June 7, 2007

The Food and Drug Administration has called for the toughest safety warning on two diabetes drugs, Avandia and Actos, whose health risks have become a focus of Congressional concern.

That decision, disclosed on Wednesday by the FDA commissioner at a packed House hearing, comes more than a year after the agency's safety reviewers strongly recommended just such a step. And it occurs amid a Congressional investigation into why the agency delayed its warnings about Avandia for years.

Glaxo in a Soup Over Avandia
Reuters | May 25, 2007

A leading doctor had voiced concerns about the heart risks of GlaxoSmithKline Plc's diabetes drug Avandia in a letter to the US Food and Drug Administration in 2000, years before Monday's high-profile study questioning its safety. One year later the FDA criticised the firm for minimising safety concerns, according to documents posted on the agency's Web site.

John Buse, president-elect of the American Diabetes Association and faculty member at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, cited "a worrisome trend in cardiovascular deaths and severe adverse events" among patients using the drug in a letter to the agency in March 2000.

Federal investigators warned nearly five years ago that the diabetes drug Avandia might be causing heart failure, according to an internal government memo released Tuesday by a consumer group.

Heart Risk Seen in Drug for Diabetes
The New York Times | May 22, 2007

An article in a leading medical journal yesterday raised serious safety questions about the widely used diabetes pill Avandia and renewed skepticism about the vigilance of federal drug regulators.

The analysis, based on a review of more than 40 existing clinical studies involving nearly 28,000 patients, showed that Avandia significantly increased the risk of heart attacks, compared with other diabetes drugs or a placebo.

Diabetes Pill Tied to Heart Risks
Chicago Tribune | May 21, 2007

A widely used diabetes pill raises the risk of heart attacks and possibly death, according to a scientific analysis that reveals what some experts are calling another Vioxx-like example of the government failing to protect the public from an unsafe drug.

More than 6 million people worldwide have taken the drug, sold as Avandia and Avandamet, since it came on the market eight years ago to help control blood sugar in people with the most common form of diabetes. About 1 million Americans use it now.

FDA Reviewing Risks of Glaxo Drug
The Washington Post | May 21, 2007

U.S. regulators are reviewing the safety of GlaxoSmithKline's diabetes drug Avandia but have not yet determined the significance of risks reported in a study released on Monday, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration official said.

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine said Avandia increased the risk of cardiac-related deaths by 64 percent and heart attacks by 43 percent. Dr. Robert Meyer, head of the FDA office that reviews diabetes drugs, said other data contradicted those findings.
